Boxing Day Sales – Greatest Sale of the Year

Every year, we are looking forward for the holiday season, where we get to spend time with our families and friends. For others, some days are even more exciting than the holiday itself. Moms, dads, and bargain hunters alike all line up outside stores, through rain and snow, for the much awaited Boxing Day Sales.

Besides the upfront discounts and bargains you get from the store, people even go online and download discount coupons and vouchers to get more from their money during the Boxing Day Sales. Sellers, store owners, shops owners, etc. all prepare for the Boxing Day Sales where every sale counts.

What is Boxing Day and when do we celebrate it?

Boxing Day is a public holiday that comes a day after Christmas, 26 December. It is observed by the Commonwealth nations including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and United Kingdom. Boxing Day is mainly observed on the 26th December, it became a special non-working holiday weekday.

According to Oxford dictionary, Boxing Day is defined as the first weekday after Christmas. If 26th December fell on a weekend (Saturday or Sunday), the following Monday is automatically a holiday.Commonwealth nations may have celebrated Boxing Day but not all of them declared it a public holiday. In Canada, only the province of Ontario declared it a holiday while the rest of the country made it an optional holiday for employees. Annual Boxing Day is also a day for fox hunt. So, It does depend on the place and the region.

In the early days, it is customary for the church and priests to put a box outside the church to collect money from the patrons. Also, wealthy people and business owners in United Kingdom collect money or presents after Christmas day and distribute to their workers. It is a sign of their thanks for a wonderful year. Boxing day sales are considered to be after Christmas sales. Merchants and landowners allow their servants and workers to go home on the 26th of December with their gifts and give them to their families.

Boxing Day is traditionally family day, where families come together after Christmas Day, and shopping day because of the great promotions each store offers. “Boxing”, for them, simply means clearing. It is also the time for stock clearing. That is why stores offer Boxing Day Sales to clear out their inventories for the previous years.

Although, Boxing Day Sales start in December, it extends up to the month of January. People save money and keep monetary Christmas gifts and spend all of it during Boxing Day Sales. Shoppers, retailers, and stores owners look forward to Boxing Day Sales to increase their earnings more for the year.

Past years, stores are closed during Christmas and Boxing Day to let their employees get 2 days off before the sales begins. But now, retailers have seen the trend and have opened all its stores during the Boxing Day and started the sale early. On Boxing Day Sales, shops are open at 5 am even earlier and offer a door-buster discount to attract even more consumers. It is not unusual for people to line up outside the store and be the first to get the greatest sale especially for electronic products.

Now that the trend of Boxing Day Sales became global, online shops also joined in and offer great promotions and deals. Some websites pool store coupons for download before the day of the sale or during the week. The good about this, stores get free advertisement from those websites. The discount coupons these sites distribute will attract more consumers to visit the store.

Again, be alert during Boxing Day Sales. It is true you can get a lot of bargains, discounts and promotions but do not get carried away. Buy only what you really need and you will use. Sales and promotions are really attractive but we tend to overbuy things that just end up in the garage or the attic or the storage boxes.

It is nice to give yourself a treat especially if you can get it at a fraction of its original cost. It is fun to shop and take advantage of the Boxing Day Sales, bargains and promotions. It is also a lot of fun doing it with someone with similar goals.
